We’ve missed you

Hello everyone ❤️????????????

I want to share a deeply personal update with you all. On February 29th, 2024, I travelled to Mauritius for a book launch and to donate funds raised by the Mauritian community in Australia for victims of cyclone Belal. I was excited to deepen my ties with those promoting Mauritian culture. My trip was planned for six weeks, but life had other plans.

On March 12th, Independence Day in Mauritius, I started experiencing unusual symptoms. Initially, it felt like muscle fatigue, but it quickly escalated. I was struggling with simple tasks like brushing my teeth and getting dressed. Despite my efforts to brush it off, the weakness grew alarming.

By the afternoon, I could barely stand or grip objects. My father and I called my cousin, a doctor, who suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). This rare condition rapidly took away my ability to move. I was admitted to Darne clinic, and by the next morning, I was completely paralyzed. The condition was so scary due to its rapid progression and devastating impact on the body.

The days that followed were a blur of tests, treatments, and prayers. Slowly, signs of improvement emerged. After 16 days in ICU and another two weeks in a general ward, I began my road to recovery, relearning to sit, move, and perform basic tasks.

During this challenging time, I chose to stay in Mauritius despite having the option to return to Australia. The overwhelming support from my family and friends here has been invaluable. My wife Simla and our three daughters joined me on May 15th after a torrid time trying to get ready to move from Australia very abruptly.

Now, three months since my diagnosis, I continue to face challenges, but I am grateful for the small victories. Picking up a spoon, holding a glass, and appreciating the simple joys of life have given me a newfound perspective. This journey has been transformative, and I am committed to making my life more meaningful, purposeful, and filled with love and care.

Thank you all for your support and well wishes. Your love has kept my spirits high, and I am determined to keep moving forward.

P.S Lakaz Mama is operating as usual in Australia. We are continually topping up your local shops with your favourite goodies.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Girish
